Messinia: Hiking Lousios Gorge

The Lousios Gorge, nestled on the western slopes of Menalon Mountain, is a captivating blend of natural beauty, ancient history, and spiritual heritage. On this guided hike, you will traverse the most scenic section of the famed Menalon Trail, following paths that wind along the gorge and the flowing Lousios River.

Your journey begins at the new Philosophou Monastery, where your guide provides an overview of the day. Venture into the gorge towards the venerable old Philosophou Monastery, founded in 963 AD, one of the oldest Byzantine monuments in Greece. Along the way, you’ll encounter ancient hermitages, watermills, and natural springs, with the legend of Zeus bathing in the river adding a touch of mythology to your adventure.

The hike continues to the Prodromou (St. John the Baptist) Monastery, a 16th-century architectural gem perched dramatically on the cliffside, offering stunning views of the gorge below. Midway, enjoy a homemade snack as you take in the serene surroundings. The final highlight of the hike is the ancient city of Gortys, once dedicated to Asclepius, the god of healing, emphasizing the area’s historical significance as a sanctuary of health.
