On the Route of Gold and Isolated Hamlets in Apuseni Mountains – 3 Days Tour
Venture deep into the Apuseni Mountains for a 3-day journey that unveils the forgotten stories of gold, ancient villages, and breathtaking natural wonders. This off-the-beaten-path tour combines light hiking with cultural discovery, making it ideal for moderately active travelers. Walk the paths of miners, meet mountain dwellers, and explore some of Romania’s most secluded and spectacular landscapes.
Nestled in western Romania, the Apuseni Mountains are a treasure trove of legends, untamed beauty, and forgotten traditions. This 3-day journey takes you beyond the tourist trail into a world shaped by centuries of gold mining, alpine pastures, and rural resilience. It’s a region where nature and culture remain inextricably linked, and where each path reveals another hidden story.
Our tour begins in Sibiu and winds northwest into the heart of the Metaliferi Mountains. On the first day, we follow the legacy of gold seekers to Brad, home to Europe’s largest native gold museum. You’ll learn how gold was once extracted from these mountains—both in grand industrial operations and through the ancestral panning methods still used in some villages today. A visit to a former gold mine deepens your understanding of the region’s history, while short hikes bring you face to face with natural wonders like Pisoaia Waterfall and the dramatic Detunata basalt columns.
The second day leads into one of the Apuseni’s most remote corners: Poiana Călineasa, a high-altitude hamlet inhabited only in summer. Reaching it through Ordâncușei Gorges and past the mysterious Poarta lui Ionele Cave, you’ll be rewarded with sublime panoramas and the rare opportunity to meet families who still live in rhythm with the seasons. From there, we visit the Scărișoara Glacier, one of the oldest underground glaciers in the world, followed by a peaceful break at the Tăuzului karst spring and an encounter with a local tulnic (alpenhorn) musician, preserving one of Romania’s most ancient musical traditions.
On our final day, we explore Roșia Montană, a town whose gold mining history stretches back over 2000 years. Once a bustling Roman settlement, now a focal point of debates over heritage and conservation, this area invites contemplation. A final hike through the forests and terraced hills surrounding the village brings the trip to a poetic close.
Whether you’re drawn by nature, history, or the soul of rural Romania, this tour delivers an unforgettable immersion into a lesser-known corner of the Carpathians—raw, real, and deeply rooted.
