Brasov: Fortified Churches of Transylvania – Prejmer and Harman

Embark on a captivating day tour to explore two of Transylvania’s most remarkable fortified churches – Prejmer and Harman. Discover the rich history and architectural prowess of these UNESCO-listed sites as you journey through time. Prejmer, the largest fortified church in southeastern Europe, and Harman, with its impressive circular curtain wall and captivating funerary chapel, offer a glimpse into the strategic defensive architecture of medieval Transylvania.

The day begins with a visit to Prejmer Fortified Church, a UNESCO-listed historic church known for being one of the best-preserved fortified churches in Transylvania. Built in 1212 by the Teutonic Knights, Prejmer’s circular walls, rising 40 feet, showcase advanced defense mechanisms and underground passageways. The fortress, attacked fifty times, was captured only once in 1661. Explore the church’s interior, accessible through a 100-foot-long arched passage fortified with two rows of gates. The red-roofed wall accommodates 272 rooms, providing shelter for village families during attacks.

The journey continues to Harman Fortified Church, constructed in the 13th century by Saxons colonists for protection against invaders. The church is surrounded by walls, bulwarks, and massive towers. The 14th-century belfry tower and prismatic towers added during the 15th century contribute to its defensive architecture. Explore the circular-shaped curtain wall fortified with additional structures, including a moat and a zwinger. Inside, discover storage rooms on two levels and a 14th-century funerary chapel with well-preserved Late Gothic mural paintings.

Both fortified churches offer picturesque settings for photography and provide insights into the tales of Transylvania. The tour concludes with a return to Brasov.
