Madeira: Volcanic Pools and Northwest 4WD Full Day Tour
Explore the wild and untouched beauty of Northwest Madeira on a full-day open-top 4×4 adventure. From misty ancient forests and mountain plateaus to dramatic cliffs and volcanic lava pools, this journey reveals the island’s most spectacular natural wonders.
Set off toward Madeira’s rugged northwest in a comfortable open-roof 4×4, designed to immerse you fully in the island’s breathtaking scenery. Leaving the south coast behind, the road climbs through deep valleys and winding mountain paths toward Serra de Água and Ginjas, where lush greenery and panoramic viewpoints showcase Madeira’s volcanic origins.
As you ascend to the Paul da Serra plateau at approximately 1,500 meters above sea level, you will discover the island’s only extensive flat terrain. Here, wide open landscapes contrast dramatically with the steep cliffs below. Along the way, your guide will introduce you to Madeira’s famous levadas – historic irrigation channels that transport water across the island. A short 15-minute walk allows you to better understand their engineering and importance to local agriculture.
The journey continues into the enchanting Fanal Forest, part of the UNESCO-listed Laurisilva woodland. Ancient laurel trees, often wrapped in mist, create a magical atmosphere unlike anywhere else on the island.
Descending toward the coast, you will arrive in Porto Moniz, famous for its natural volcanic lava pools formed by ancient eruptions. Weather permitting, enjoy time to swim in these crystal-clear Atlantic pools. An optional three-course lunch with beverage and coffee is available for €12.00 per person.
On the return route, admire dramatic cliffs, cascading waterfalls in Seixal, and stunning coastal scenery near São Vicente. Before heading back, stop to taste Madeira’s traditional drink, poncha – often called the island’s “nectar.”
