Madeira: West Volcanic Pools & Unesco 4×4 Tour

Venture into the untamed beauty of Madeira’s northwest on an exhilarating open-top 4×4 adventure. Discover UNESCO-listed forests, dramatic coastal cliffs, and natural volcanic pools on this immersive full-day journey through some of the island’s most breathtaking landscapes.

Experience the raw and authentic side of Madeira as you travel in a small group (maximum 8 participants) aboard an open-roof 4×4 vehicle. This full-day expedition follows hidden mountain roads, narrow stone paths, and off-road tracks that reveal landscapes rarely seen by ordinary visitors.

Your journey begins heading north through Serra de Água and Encumeada, where panoramic viewpoints open over deep valleys carved by volcanic forces. Continuing toward Ginjas and Paul da Serra plateau, you will reach one of the island’s most unique natural areas. At over 1,500 meters above sea level, the plateau offers sweeping open scenery and a striking contrast to the dramatic coastline below.

The adventure then leads into the magical Fanal Forest, part of the UNESCO-protected Laurisilva Forest. Ancient laurel trees, often shrouded in mist, create a mystical atmosphere and highlight Madeira’s extraordinary biodiversity. Here, nature feels untouched and timeless.

Descending toward the Atlantic, you will reach Porto Moniz, famous for its natural volcanic lava pools formed by ancient eruptions. Weather permitting, enjoy time to swim in the crystal-clear waters. Alternatively, you may stop at the black sand beach of Seixal, another stunning coastal gem framed by waterfalls and cliffs.

Throughout the day, your guide will share stories about local traditions, geology, and island life, offering insight into the lifeblood that has shaped Madeira’s culture and landscapes.
