Rovaniemi: Arctic Aurora Chase by Snowmobile

As dusk settles over the Arctic, you’ll be picked up from a meeting point or selected hotel in Rovaniemi and outfitted with full winter overalls, boots, gloves and a helmet. After a safety briefing and snowmobile driving instruction, you and another guest will take turns navigating a snowmobile across frozen lakes, through snow-lined forests, and into the heart of Lapland’s chilly wilderness. The air is crisp, the snow under the sled gleams, and the only lights around come from the stars and the sled’s beam.

About halfway through the journey, the guide stops at a remote wilderness location where a warming fireside BBQ is ready—sausages roasting over the fire, hot drinks steaming in mugs—and you’ll take a moment to pause, savor the surroundings, and listen to the guide’s stories about the arctic environment, auroras and nights in Lapland. After the break you continue the ride deeper into darker expanses and open skies, where, with a bit of luck and the right conditions, you may gaze upwards to see the aurora borealis wavelike across the horizon. Even if the lights don’t appear, the experience of controlling a snowmobile through this pristine winter world and stopping under the stars is an adventure in itself.

• Drivers must be 18 years or older and hold a valid driving licence.
• Children over 2 years may participate as passengers; children under certain height may ride in a sled behind the guide.
• Not wheelchair or stroller accessible; snowy terrain and snowmobile access apply.
• Dress in warm base layers beneath the provided outergear—Arctic conditions can be extreme.
• The northern lights are a natural phenomenon and cannot be guaranteed, though this tour maximises your chances.
