Saariselka: Day Tour to Pyha-Luosto National Park and Amethyst Mine

Your full-day adventure begins with a scenic drive southwest from Saariselkä to Pyhä-Luosto National Park, a land shaped by ancient fells, dense boreal forests, and deep geological time. As you travel through the snow-covered taiga or lush summer woodlands (depending on the season), your guide will share stories about the landscape, the indigenous Sámi culture, and the wildlife that call the region home.

Upon arrival at Lampivaara Hill, located deep in the heart of the national park, you’ll hike or take a snowcat ride (in winter) through the serene forest to reach the Lampivaara Amethyst Mine. Nestled on top of a fell with sweeping views of the wilderness, the mine is one of the few sustainable gemstone operations in the world. Here, the ancient amethysts—some over 2,000 million years old—rest just beneath your feet.

At the mine, you’ll enjoy a guided tour to learn about the geology of the area and the fascinating story of how these crystals were formed. Then, grab a pickaxe and descend into the working section of the mine where you can dig for your own amethyst—and keep one small stone as a souvenir. Whether you unearth a deep violet beauty or a pale lilac treasure, each gem is unique.

After the mining session, warm up with a hot drink and local snacks at the hilltop café, where panoramic views of the national park stretch as far as the eye can see. Weather permitting, there may be time for a short nature walk or additional exploration of the area before the return journey to Saariselkä.
