Budapest: Lake Balaton Day Tour

Escape the city and discover the serene beauty of Lake Balaton, Central Europe’s largest freshwater lake. This full-day excursion from Budapest combines charming lakeside towns, scenic cruising, historic landmarks, and breathtaking panoramic views for a truly relaxing Hungarian countryside experience.

Leave the vibrant streets of Budapest behind and journey through the rolling landscapes of western Hungary toward magnificent Lake Balaton, often called the “Hungarian Sea.” This 10-hour tour offers a perfect balance of nature, culture, and leisure.

Travel in comfort by air-conditioned coach to Balatonfüred, an elegant spa town located on the northern shore of the lake. Known for its historic villas, tree-lined promenades, and refreshing lakeside atmosphere, the town invites you to slow down and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. A charming ride on a nostalgia train introduces you to the area’s highlights in a relaxed and enjoyable way.

Afterward, enjoy free time to stroll along the picturesque promenade, admire the sailboats gently gliding across the water, or savor lunch at a local restaurant (at your own expense).

In the early afternoon, board a boat for a scenic one-hour cruise on Lake Balaton. From the water, take in panoramic views of the surrounding hills, vineyards, and charming settlements that frame the shoreline.

The journey continues to the stunning Tihany Peninsula, a region rich in natural beauty and cultural heritage. Overlooking the lake, the historic Abbey of Tihany, founded in 1055 by King András I, stands proudly as one of Hungary’s most important medieval monuments. From here, enjoy spectacular views across the lake before returning to Budapest in the early evening, refreshed by a day in Hungary’s most beloved holiday region.

Lake Balaton is a hidden gem, and this tour was a great way to see it in just one day! I especially loved the Tihany Peninsula, with its lavender fields and picturesque abbey. The boat ride on the lake was relaxing, and we even had time to enjoy some local fish dishes by the water. I just wish we had a bit more free time to explore, but overall, it was an amazing experience!
