Skadar Lake: Birdwatching and Photography on Skadar Lake
Set out on an extraordinary journey into one of Europe’s most significant bird sanctuaries. Lake Skadar, a paradise for birdwatchers and nature photographers, is home to a diverse range of avian species that thrive in its unspoiled wetlands. This early morning tour offers the perfect opportunity to observe rare birds in their natural habitat while enjoying the serenity of Montenegro’s largest lake. Whether you’re an experienced ornithologist, an amateur photographer, or simply a lover of nature, this adventure promises an unforgettable experience.
Begin your adventure in Virpazar, the gateway to Lake Skadar National Park. The early morning hours provide the most tranquil setting, as the lake awakens to the sounds of nature. With fewer disturbances from boats and people, the still waters become a haven for birdlife, making this the ideal time for observation and photography.
Enjoy a warm cup of coffee or tea as we set sail on the calm lake, ensuring a peaceful start to your morning. Cozy blankets are available to keep you comfortable while we navigate through the scenic waterways. Our expert guide will provide fascinating insights into the region’s bird species and their behaviors, while also sharing stories about the lake’s rich history and unique landmarks.
Sail past the historic ruins of Lesendro Fortress, a favorite gathering place for birds such as cormorants and herons. From here, we continue towards the mouth of the Morača River, a designated Important Bird and Biodiversity Area. This lush and secluded wetland is home to rare species like the Dalmatian pelican, pygmy cormorant, and various migratory birds that stop here throughout the year.
As we venture deeper into the lake, we reach the remote cluster of three wild islands, a perfect nesting site for many bird species. Keep your binoculars ready as we quietly approach these peaceful havens, allowing you to capture stunning close-up shots of the lake’s diverse birdlife.
After two hours of birdwatching and photography, we make our way back to Virpazar, reflecting on the incredible sights and sounds of the morning.
